Hanmer Springs, as the name implies, has a world-famous outdoor hot springs complex (thermal reserve) that is great to relax in during winter or summer.

The small alpine village is surrounded by forested hills and mountains. The forests have numerous walking, tramping and mountain-biking trails.

Other activities in Hanmer Springs include: bungy jumping, jet boating, quad biking, river rafting, skiing, golf, mini-golf, scenic flights, hunting and fishing.

Whether you're after a family ride through forests, a tough and muddy mountain bike trail or a smooth road ride through alpine passes, the Hurunui has plenty to offer those wanting to get a break on their bikes. Hanmer Springs has an exceptional number of biking tracks circling in and around the village.  From easy riding trails to challenging tracks that will have you concentrating to stay on the bike.   Further afield, the St James Cycle Trail was the first of the Great Rides to open as part of the New Zealand Cycle Trial.  It's a 64-kilometre trial that offers some stunning scenery - soaring mountain peaks, crystal clear rivers, alpine meadows, beech forests and grassy river flats.  There is also a shorter 15 kilometre loop which is family friendly.

Ski & Snowboard

Winter sees the Hurunui come alive as one of the playgrounds for snowbunnies in the South Island. The region has two excellent ski-fields.  The Hanmer Springs Ski Area has some beautifully groomed trails and even offers accommodation on the mountain.  It's suited for beginniers and advanced skiers and its Poma lift is the longest in the Southern Hemisphere at 807 metres. Mt Lyford boasts the Terako Ski Area which is described as sunny and family friendly. Its Wild Ride Terrain Park has plenty of challenges too.
